What are the United Buddy Bears?

 

The United Buddy Bears are many things. They are fiberglass bears over six feet tall which are painted by artists from nations all over the world. They are canvases to showcase the creativity, national pride, and spirit of people from over 120 countries. And they are the symbol of global peace, tolerance, and friendship. The United Buddy Bears carry an important message.

For over 720 years the bear has been the heraldic symbol of Berlin. In June 2001, some 430 colorful, life-sized bear status were placed in streets and squares throughout the. German capital. The bears are hand-painted by artists and sculpted out of weatherproof plastic.

 

Due to popular demand, the Buddy Bear Berlin show will continue until the end of 2002. In fact, the Buddy Bears will be joined by their offspring, the Mini Buddy Bears.

 

Through November 2002, in the vicinity of the Brandenburg Gate, 150 Buddy Bears will be set up in a circle reaching out to one another, each representing a country having an embassy in the city.

Bears in Circle

 

 

 

125 Buddy Bears stand in a circle, symbolically taking each other by the hand to form a circle of solidarity. About 140 artists have designed and painted these Bears. one of them is Jonathan Petch who painted the Buddy Bear for the British Embassy.

 

Idea and Concept

 

The bear is Berlin's heraldic animal, Berlin is the capital of Germany and more and more embassies have come to represent their countries in this city.

Against this background there was the idea to make an artistic appeal for tolerance and international understanding in Berlin. The plan was to create a circle of Buddy Bears, standing in upright position, symbolically taking each other by the hand.

The idea of the "United Buddy Bears" runs under the title:
"We have to get to know each other better, it makes us understand one another better, trust each other more, and live together more peacefully."

 

Presentation

 

The circle of "United Buddy Bears" stands on a highly symbolic square in Berlin. Next to the Brandenburg Gate and Pariser Platz, precisely where the wall used to separate the people of this city.

이 페스티벌은 독일 베를린(2002~2003)을 시작으로 오스트리아 키츠뷔헬(2004), 중국 홍콩(2004), 터키 이스탄불(2004~2005), 일본 도쿄(2005) 등을 돌며 세계 순회 중이다.

'사랑', '상생', '똘레랑스'(다른 사람의 차이와 다름을 존중하고 인정하는 태도), '인류의 상호이해'를 주제로 하는 본 아름다운 버디베어 서울 페스티벌은 1989년 독일통일을 계기로 베를린에서 기획된 독일연방정부 및 베를린시 인증 공식국제문화행사이다.

세계 순회전에 오른 버디베어가 전하는 이 화려한 색채의 메시지는 다양한 민족, 다양한 언어, 다양한 문화를 상징화함으로써 사랑, 평화적 상생, 인류의 상호 이해, 그리고 똘레랑스 (다른 사람의 차이와 다름을 존중하고 인정하는 태도)의 정신을 강화하게 될 것이다.

 

 

 

 

아름다운 버디베어 서울페스티벌

10월 서울 전시 이후에는 2006년 호주 시드니와 베를린(월드컵 기간 중), 평양 등 국제적인 도시가 이 '특별한 곰'을 맞을 준비를 하고 있다.

페스티벌은 곰 조형물 전시 외에도 '곰문화 컴퍼런스', '세계 어린이 버디베어 그림공모전', '버디베어 체험 프로그램','재활용 상상 놀이단 공연'. '유니세프 지구촌 세계 어린이 사진전', '아름다운 버디베어 나눔장터' 등 어린이와 청소년을 위한 다양한 부대행사가 마련되어 있다.

이번 행사의 가장 큰 목적은 지구촌 극빈 어린이 돕기. 기부와 버디베어 경매를 통해 조성된 수익금은 아름다운 재단과 유니세프를 통해 세계 곳곳의 어린이들을 위해 쓰이게 된다.
