The Marines Who Never Returned (돌아오지 않는 해병 - Doraoji anneun haebyong), aka Marines Are Gone,

is a 1963 South Korean film directed by Lee Man-hee. It was released in the U.S. in 1966 as Marines Battleground.

For this film, Lee was given the Best Director award at the third Grand Bell Awards ceremony in 1964.

The film was also given the awards for Best Sound and Best Cinematography.

 

 

During the Korean War,

a squad of Marines from the South battle Chinese forces in the North, and are killed off one by one.

 

Through the harrowing experiences of a marine platoon in the Korean War,

director Lee Man-hee highlights the power and poignancy of even the smallest acts of humanity

when all around inhumanity prevails.

Lee deftly weaves combat spectacle and intimate character studies of the uniformed men,

played by an ensemble cast of stars at the height of their careers, in this crucial work in the Korean film canon.

한국전쟁 당시 강대식(장동휘) 분대장이 이끄는 한 해병부대가 인천 상륙작전에 참가한다.

서울수복 후 북진을 거듭하는 국군은,

양민의 집단학살은 물론 임산부나 어린 여자 아이까지 가차없이 사살하는 북한군과 달리,

전쟁으로 오갈 데 없는 고아가 된 소녀 영희(전영선)를 몰래 부대자루에 넣어데리고 다니며 보살핀다거나,

전투를 앞두고 두려움에 떨며 서로에게 용기를 주면서 전우애를 나누는 등

참화 속에서도 인간적인 모습을 보인다.

강대식의 분대는 인해전술을 벌이는 중공군과의 사력을 다한 전투에서 결국 승리하지만,

부대인원 42명 가운데 두 명만이 생존한 채 나머지는 영영`돌아오지 않는 해병' 이 되어버리고 만다.

 

 

 

이만희의 첫 번째 전쟁영화이며 현존하는 이만희 영화 중 가장 초창기의 작품이다.

해병대와 국방부의 전폭적인 지지 속에 대규모 제작비를 투자하고

순촬영기간만 6개월이 넘는 대장정을 통해 만들어진 이 영화는

한국 전쟁영화의 한획을 긋는 기념비적인 작품이다.

국가나 이데올로기 때문이 아니라 “살아남아 가족에게 돌아가기 위해 승리해야만” 하는

군인들이 던지는 “생존을 위해 우리는 얼마나 인간이기를 포기해야 하는가”라는 본질적인 질문은

이후 이만희 전쟁영화가 지속적으로 다루는 핵심이 된다.
