고대 로마 지배계급의 공식복장 ‘토가’는 대부분 표백하지 않은 양모로 만들어져 갈색이 많았다. 그러나 공직에 나서고 싶은 이들은 결백, 정식, 지조를 시위하는 의미로 흰색의 토가를 입었다.

갈색 토가에 하얀 석회가루를 칠해 입는 이들도 많아 한 시인은 당시의 정치꾼들을 이렇게 비꼬았다고 한다.

2008년 7월 미국 지명위원회(BGN: Board on Geographic Names)가 한반도 동해안의 섬 ‘독도’를 ‘주권미지정 지역(undesignated sovereignty)’으로 변경표기한것이 알려져 국내에서 큰 논란이 되었다가 한국정부의 청에 따라 다시 ‘South Korea’로 원상회복되는 일이 있었다. ‘주권미지정’이란 특정국가의 주권이 미치지 않는 지역을 의미하며, 국제적으로는 대개 ‘영유권 분쟁이 진행 중’이라는 의미로 통용된다. 미국 지명위원회는 독도에 대한 표기에 있어서도 ‘리앙쿠르 록스(Liancourt Rocks)’와 함께 ‘Tok-to’와 ‘Takesima’를 함께 등재해놓고 있다. ‘리앙쿠르’는 독도를 처음 ‘발견’한 유럽의 배 이름으로 국제사회가 독도를 ‘중립적’으로 표현할 때 쓰는 이름이다.

특정 단어의 어원과 변천사, 철자와 어의 속에 숨어 있는 문화사를 담은 EBS의 인기 프로그램 '3분 영어'가 책으로 다시 태어났다. 영단어를 키워드로 풀어낸 30가지 이야기와 각 단어를 활용한 명사와 위인들의 에세이를 싣고 있다. 억지로 쓰고 외워서 기억하는 지식이 아닌 보고 느끼는 순간 기억하게 되는 살아 있는 지식사전이며, 가슴으로 기억하는 감성 단어장.
