  Catharsis is an artwork by Jakob Kudsk Steensen immersing audiences within a digital simulation of
  a re-imagined old-growth forest, a forest that has developed undisturbed over hundreds of years.

Jakob Kudsk Steensen is a Danish artist and art director based in New York City. He is concerned with how imagination, technology and ecology intertwine. In a practice that emphasizes field work and collaboration, Kudsk Steensen develops large-scale video and XR installations that invite viewers into new ecological realities. Key collaborators include Composer and Musical Director for the Philip Glass Ensemble Michael Riesman, Ornithologist and author Dr. Douglas H. Pratt, Architect Sir David Adjaye OBE RA, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and the Natural History Museum London, among others.

Kudsk Steensen has recently exhibited internationally at the Venice Biennale, the Serpentine Galleries, the PinchukArtCentre, MATADERO Madrid, Tranen Center for Contemporary Art, Pylon-Hub, SXSW, BRIC Brooklyn, the 5th Trondheim Biennale for Art and Technology, the Carnegie Museum of Art, MAXXI Rome, FRIEZE London, and Ok Corral, among other institutions and festivals.

The artist was the inaugural recipient of the Serpentine Galleries’ Augmented Architecture Commission, which was established with Google Arts & Culture and architect Sir David Adjaye, OBE in 2019. The Deep Listener was the first project of its kind to use Augmented Reality to take the public on an audio-visual ecological expedition through Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park, London.

Kudsk Steensen was shortlisted for the Future Generation Art Prize 2019. As part of the awards program, he was invited to create and exhibit new installations of RE-ANIMATED (2017-18) in Kieve and Venice. He has received awards from the Danish Arts Foundation, The Augustinus Foundation, the Lumen Arts Prize, The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, Games for Change, the Lumiere Foundation, The Telly Awards, and Cinequest Festival.

Kudsk Steensen is currently an Artist-in-Residence at La Becque, a Swiss residency focused on nature and technology. Next he will join the residency program at Luma Arles in France. He has held residencies at Mana Contemporary, Harvestworks, Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, AADK, Centra Negra, MASS MoCA, and BRIC Brooklyn. He is an alumnus of NEW INC, a technology and culture incubator by The NEW MUSEUM, in NYC.
