문경원 & 전준호 Moon Kyungwon & Jeon Joonho 미지에서 온 소식News From Nowhere

 

News from Nowhere, Moon Kyungwon and Jeon Joonho’s solo exhibition held May 3rd through September 4th at 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa (2022). This is the largest scale solo exhibition of the duo ever held in Japan. Among seven galleries in the museum, the works displayed include: those shown from the MMCA Hyundai Motor Series 2021 – News from Nowhere, Freedom Village, exhibited at the National Museum of Contemporary Art, and 15 other works; from El Fin del Mundo, which began with a News from Nowhere project and is a collection of the museum; JICHIKU Region AIR Kanaiwa-Ono Art Project, collaborated with regional communities; a new video piece and more. A new work News from Nowhere: Eclipse starring Ryu Jun-yeol as a main cast narrates dramatic scenes of a man’s life on a life boat floating on the boundless ocean. This video installation piece depicts the struggle of humans for seeking the fundamental freedom. The News from Nowhere project is a long-term project progressed over a decade by Moon and Jeon who considers art as a way of changing human cognition.

What is art? What does it mean to our lives? 예술이 우리 삶에서 가지는 의미는 무엇인가? 최근 큰 주목을 받고 있는 작가그룹 문경원, 전준호의 공동 프로젝트 NEWS FROM NOWHERE (미지에서 온 소식) 은 현재 예술의 사회적 기능과 역할을 조명하는 것으로부터 출발한다. 예술가와 디자이너, 건축가 등 각계의 전문가들이 모여 예술의 지향점을 짚어보고, 예술을 넘어 교육, 정치, 문화, 종교 등의 다양한 분야에 걸쳐 사회 전반을 성찰하며 다가올 미래의 모습을 그린다. NEWS FROM NOWHERE은 예술을 통해 인간의 삶을 둘러싼 세계에 대해 던지는 질문들을 담고 있다. 현재의 시스템은 미래에도 유효할까, 인간의 삶을 지탱하는 가치는 무엇인가, 예술은 여전히 살아 있을까, 우리는 무엇을 먹고 무엇을 입을까, 노을은 여전히 예쁜가...이들의 목적은 미래 사회를 흥미롭게 그려보는 것이 아니다. 또는 하나의 유토피아, 혹은 디스토피아를 제시하려는 것도 아니다. 미래와 관련된 이 질문들에 대한 답은, 현실을 둘러싼 담론 혹은 일련의 주장이자 성찰이다.

 

 

문경원 & 전준호는 2009년부터 듀오로 활동하며 정치·경제적 모순, 역사적 갈등, 기후 변화와 같은 인류가 직면한 위기와 급변하는 세상에서 예술의 기능과 역할을 탐구하는 작업을 선보여왔다. 대표작 ‹미지에서 온 소식(News from Nowhere)›(2012–)은 다학제적 참여형 플랫폼으로 디자인, 과학, 철학, 경제학, 정치학 등 다양한 분야의 전문가들과 협업하며 현재를 성찰하고 미래의 새로운 가치와 대안을 제시하고 있다. 독일 카셀 도큐멘타(2012), 이탈리아 베니스 비엔날레(2015), 스위스 미그로스 현대미술관(2015), 영국 테이트 리버풀(2018–2019), 한국 국립현대미술관(2012–2022), 일본 가나자와 21세기 현대미술관(2022) 등에 초대되어 장소 특정적 프로젝트로 영상, 설치, 아카이브, 출판물 등을 제작하고 전시하였다.
