PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Conceptual background:

BOOM BOOM: super heroine super beauty is a part of an ongoing series of the TOKI/Cyborg project, focusing on capturing the animation process of constructing four perfect/desirable parts of the TOKI's body.

The project (re) presents and explores the domains of psychoanalysis, classicism, Asian manga/anime, cinema, music, politics, ethnology, mathematics, technology, plastic surgery, genetics, cybernetics, cultural studies, feminism, eroticism and aesthetics.

Like Botticelli's Venus, TOKI is born fully formed; an amalgam of idealisations of feminine beauty and desirability, in the case of TOKI animation on Western and Asian popular culture as well as ancient mythology. However, in the long animation process of the construction of super heroine beauty, TOKI reveals herself to be able to shift from being cute to being classically feminine, sexual and sensual.

By focusing on the modelling process, the artistic equipment is exposed. The mouse of the computer becomes like a virtual cosmetic surgeon's knife to create prefect desirable female body. The project create dialogue about the relationship between technology and woman issues.

TOKI positions herself as both desiring and desirable subject. The four parts of body are a reminiscent of male fetish and masculine gaze that segregate women's bodies into their various parts. Hye Rim Lee examines the traditional male gaze which seeks erotic pleasure from the spectacle of the female body. The audience is presented with a sexuality that referenced the female body's role as a fetish object constituted by and for an erotic and predominantly male gaze. The evolving poetics of beauty is accelerated by the pulse-like sound suggesting the erotic desire and creates the voyeuristic/ non-participative fascination to the audience. The voice seduces and draws the viewer closer to the work.

TOKI/Cyborg Project: game, pop and cyber world explores the creative process of computer game design and the artistic development of game concepts. The project scrutinises the links between video games and popular culture and presents a discussion on the impact of games on popular culture. The project analyses psychological spaces within the game structure and defines new modes of expression within the medium. The project demonstrates and exposes the hyper-realistic and illusionistic computer-graphic tools, creating a dialogue about the relationship between technology and female and feminist issues. The artist will present an awareness of the power of gender stereotypes whilst acknowledging that sexuality is a crucial dimension to life and identity in the project.

TOKI is always feminine; toy-like, sexually charged, pure-white, pretty, plastic, a giver of instant gratification and an impermeable girl-woman surrogate for both innocence and sexual solicitation. Ultimately she is a surface for the projection of fantasy; a fiction holding the promise of realisation, as a cyborg machine born from the vacillating and polymorphous heart of human desire.

Description of the project:

BOOM BOOM: super heroine super beauty is an audio/visual installation created using a 3D animation process. The installation comprises 4 DVD projections and surround sound in a dark room. The room should be bigger than 7m x 7m however the size of the room is negotiable.

The installation could be possibly presented as a grid format projecting 4 screens on one wall. The other option would be that each screen could go on top of each other(4 stacked screens) shaping 4 screens in a long rectangular shape on a long wall. The height of the wall would be longer than 8 metres. Please see attached images of the exhibition view.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR VIEWING:

  1. 4X data projectors
  2. 4x DVD players
  3. Surround sound system (PA system with 5 speakers) connected to one dvd player, The 4 speakers should be placed at human ear level on each corner of the room and the main sub woofer and a main speaker should be placed in the middle of the one wall (could be on top of the wall depending on where the projector is). The speakers shouldn't interrupt the projections.
  4. 4 X white walls for screens
  5. Cubic dark room (floor: 7m X 7m ~ 10m x10m, the bigger the better however the size of the room is negotiable). The room should be painted in black.
