 (서울=연합뉴스) 김중배 기자 = '한국의 구글'로 불리는 NHN이 온라인게임 시장을 통해 미국시장 진출을 위한 교두보 확보에 나섰다고 월스트리트저널(WSJ)이 26일 보도했다.

 

NHN은 지난해 설립한 미국 현지법인 NHN USA가 운영하는  게임포털  이지닷컴의 공개 시범서비스를 이달 7일 미국 내에서 개시했다.

 

WSJ은 NHN이 한국시장에서 구글과 야후를 제치고 검색시장 점유율 1위를 고수, '한국의 구글'로 불리고 있다고 소개한 뒤 검색업체 '첫눈' 인수를 통해 기반확대 및 국제시장 진출을 본격화하고 있는 등 최근 현황도 비교적 자세히 전했다.

NHN이 한국 증시에 상장돼 시가총액만 50억달러에 달하고 있으며 일본 및  중국의 온라인게임시장에서 각각 가입자가 1천300만명과 1억7천만명에 달하는 것으로 알려진 게임포털 사이트를 운영하고 있다는 점 등도 소개됐다. 

김범수 대표이사는 기사에 실린 인터뷰에서 "우리 목표는 글로벌 플레이어가 되는 것이며 이를 위해 미국시장의 교두보 확보는 매우 중요한 의미를 갖는다"고 말했다.

Web Game Firm Of South Korea To Expand in U.S.

SEOUL, South Korea -- NHN Corp., the leading provider of online games in Asia, is expanding to the U.S. with plans to open an English-language game Web site this year.

 

The company -- which has been called South Korea's Google because it operates the top Korean-language search engine, by both revenue and number of searches -- opened an office in California's Silicon Valley last year and has had about 50 people working on the new game site.

Its co-founders and co-chief executives, Kim Beom Su and Moon Tae Sik, moved to the U.S. to focus on the effort. "Our plan is to become a major player world-wide, so getting a foothold in the U.S. is a critical step for NHN," Mr. Kim said.

 

NHN, which has shares listed in Seoul and a market capitalization of about $5 billion, declined to release specifics about the new site. NHN has more than 13 million subscribers in Japan and owns half of a game portal site in China that claims 170 million subscribers. The world-wide market for online games is about $3 billion a year.

 

In South Korea, NHN operates a game portal and the Naver search engine, which far outdraws the Korean offerings of companies such as Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc. In June, NHN acquired a smaller Korean Internet portal, Chutnoon.com, for $36 million to boost its base and fend off its larger international competitors. Yahoo recently acquired a small stake in a Korean electronic-commerce company called GMarket Inc. for $60 million from a U.S. venture-capital firm.
