One Of Strong Impact on My Life
What was the specific event that had a strong impact on my life? This inquiry made me to think hard all last week, and I recalled several significant events to change my life. The very first one impacted me when I was a second grader in elementary school. It was a news article about “Ethiopia Hunger Crisis” announced worldwide in 1971. Ever since this heart-ached impact occurred to me, I have always been looking after others first before me. Compassion for others became the first priority of my life.
However, a book illustrating a different perspective of life impacted me while I was seeking the solution of struggle for a long time. The subject was which way is the best way to take care of my aged ill mother who was living alone in Korea while I was living and working in America. Dare to Be Yourself by Alan Cohen is the book that guided the different rays of life to solve my long contemplated problem. The book was sent to me out of the blue by one of my friends from Korea in May 2002. He enclosed a short note saying "You should read this book for your own sake." Those words became an on-going questions all the way through the last page of the book. It happened to me right after I came back from 10 days trip for my mother’s seventieth birthday celebration banquet in Korea.
Dare to Be Yourself published in Korean edition is the one that I read. It is titled 내것이 아니면 모두 버려라. The meaning of the Korean title is “if it is not mine, throw all away.” But the real meaning beneath the words is “Do what you really want to do, or you will lose everything.” Cohen stated in his book, “Success is your birthright. Loss is impossible. Do what you came here to do. Be what you are.” His powerful words really hit against what I had been neglecting for long time. Furthermore, they touched deep inside of my heart that I always have been ached. Hence, I decided what I have to do and what I really want to do. Despite of heavy responsible to run ECHO Learning Center in Torrance, Southern California, I had traveled to Korea eight times to take care of my mother during her critical health condition. They were the most valuable opportunities that we both deeply felt in the precious relationship between mother and daughter.
The last eighth trip for my mother, I was able to take care of her for last three months and be with her until she reached to the heaven on 10th of October 2005. Even though it was heartbroken sorrow, I was able to let her go with peaceful mind. Moreover, I was able to write a memorable moment of her in my ached-heart. “Mother who was nobly born became dazzling brilliant clear light emanating from her and unified with the origin attaining eternal liberty.” Alan Cohen’s Dare to Be Yourself certainly changed my value of life and guided me to do the right thing before it will be too late. It impacted the recent periods of my life and made my life the most precious one.
