The world of the Old Testament can seem hard to understand, especially for people living in times and places so far removed from the ancient Middle East. It's not just that we wear different clothes and hold different jobs--people in the West just don't have the same history, the same culture, or the same way of thinking as Old Testament characters like Abraham and David. And this disconnect can make studying the Old Testament an arduous and confusing process.
A Popular Survey of the Old Testament is designed to help ordinary people enrich their understanding of Old Testament people and events. 우리는 흔히 구약보다는 신약이 성도들에게 더 많이 읽혀진다는 말을 듣는다. 목회자들도 일반적으로 신약에서 본문을 택하여 설교하는 경향이 있는 것 같다.
이러한 실정으로 말미암아 역자는 구약을 이해하는 데 도움이 될 수 있는 구약개론을 추천해 달라는 요청을 받은 일이 종종 있었다. 그러던 중 몇 년 전 어는 날 서점에서 노르만 가이슬러의 저서를 접하게 되었다.
당시 그는 트리니티 신학교에 재직중이었다. 나는 이 책이야말로 구약 이해에 큰 도움을 줄 것이라고 확신하고 번역할 생각을 갖게 되었다. 성도가 신약과 함께 "율법과 선지자의 글과 시편"에 기록된 말씀을 애독하는 데 본서가 도움이 되기를 바라는 바이다.

Dr. Norman L. Geisler (born 1932) is the author or co-author of some 70 books and hundreds of articles. He has taught theology, philosophy, and apologetics on the college or graduate level for 50 years. He has spoken or debated in some 26 countries on six continents. He has a B.A, M.A., Th.B., and Ph.D (in philosophy). He has taught at some of the top Seminaries in the United States, including Trinity Evangelical and Dallas Seminary, and has been guest professor at numerous other schools. He and his wife Barbara live in the Charlotte, N.C. areas. He maintains an active writing, speaking, and lecturing ministry across the country.
