When Helena Norberg-Hodge first visited Ladakh in 1975, she found a pristine environment, a self-reliant economy and a people who exhibited a remarkable joie de vivre. But then came a tidal wave of economic growth and development. Over the last four decades, this remote Himalayan land has been transformed by outside markets and Western notions of “progress.” As a direct result, a whole range of problems―from polluted air and water to unemployment, religious conflict, eating disorders and youth suicide―have appeared for the first time.

Yet this is far from a story of despair. Social and environmental breakdown, Norberg-Hodge argues, are neither inevitable nor evolutionary, but the products of political and economic decisions―and those decisions can be changed. In a new Preface, she presents a kaleidoscope of projects around the world that are pointing the way for both human and ecological well-being. These initiatives are the manifestation of a rapidly growing localization movement, which works to rebuild place-based cultures―strengthening community and our connection with nature.

Ancient Futures challenges us to redefine what a healthy economy means, and to find ways to carry centuries-old wisdom into our future. The book and a related film by the same title have, between them, been translated into more than 40 languages.

헬레나 노르베리 호지Helena Norberg-Hodge의 《오래된 미래Ancient Futures》는 하루에도 엄청난 양으로 쏟아졌다가 금방 사라지는 책과 달리 1992년 발간 이후 전 세계 50여 개 언어로 번역되어 바로 지금까지 전 세계 독자들에게 사랑을 받아온 책이다. 이 책은 단순한 베스트셀러가 아닌 현대의 인류학적?사회학적으로 귀중한 보고서로서, 우리가 사는 사회의 한 단면을 적나라하게 보여주며 사회와 지구 전체를 생각하게 만드는 고전이다.

이 책은 총 3부로 구성되어 있으며, 각 부에서 다루는 주제는 다음과 같다.

1부 전통에 관하여는 1975년 언어학자인 저자가 라다크 방언의 연구를 위해 라다크 마을을 방문하여, 자신이 살아왔던 서구세계와는 다른 가치로 살아가던 사람들의 평화롭고 지혜로운 모습을 그리고 있다.
2부 변화에 관하여는 1975년 인도 정부의 개방정책에 따라 개방된 라다크 전통문화의 수도 레Leh가 외국 관광객들이 가지고 들어온 서구 문화와 가치관들에 의해 철저히 파괴되어 가는 과정을 그리고 있다.
3부 미래를 향하여는 헬레나 호지가 라다크 사회의 회복을 위해 설립한 국제 민간기구인 ‘에콜로지및문화를위한국제협회ISEC’의 구체적인 활동과 ‘라다크 프로젝트Ladakh Project’에 대한 소개와 활동 상황을 그리고 있다. 저자는 서구식의 소모를 전제로 하는 개발의 폐해에 대해 많은 사람들이 공감하고, 그들 토양에 맞는 새로운 가치의 정립과 발전을 이루어나가도록 설득하고 있다.

언어학자이며 작가이자 사회운동가. 스웨덴과 독일, 오스트리아, 영국, 미국을 오가며 연구활동을 하고 있고, 에콜로지및문화를위한국제협회ISEC와 라다크프로젝트의 설립자이며 상임이사로 활동하고 있다. 1986년 노벨상에 버금가는 권위를 지니며 대체노벨상이라 불리는 Right Livelihood Award의 수상자로 선정되었으며, 이 책을 영상화한 동명 영화에 공동 제작자로 참여하기도 했다. 50여 개 언어로 번역된 책과 영화는 현재까지 세계 전역의 민간운동기구 관계자들 사이에 주요 자료로 활용되고 있다.

In this historic interview from June 1986, we hear from the young linguist, Helena Norberg-Hodge, about her encounter with Ladakh (also known as "Little Tibet") and her work in the region, exploring sustainable and culturally appropriate alternatives to conventional development. The interview took place in Ladakh and was conducted by Barrie Machin, ethnographic author and film maker. Helena Norberg-Hodge visited Ladakh for the first time in 1975, just after the area has been opened up to the outside world. She becomes fluent in Ladakhi and moves onto founding the Ladakh Ecological Development Group (LEDeG) in collaboration with local elders. In 1986, Helena Norberg-Hodge starts writing her classical masterpiece "Ancient Futures - Learning from Ladakh" and later produces a documentary video of the same name. The book and video have been translated to over 40 languages. 

 

Helena is the founder and director of the International NGO Local Futures. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Right Livelihood Award (aka the “Alternative Nobel Prize”), the Arthur Morgan Award and the Goi Peace Prize for contributing to “the revitalization of cultural and biological diversity, and the strengthening of local communities and economies worldwide.”

Ladakh, or 'Little Tibet', is a wildly beautiful desert land high in the Western Himalayas. It is a place of few resources and an extreme climate. Yet for more than a thousand years, it has been home to a thriving culture. Traditions of frugality and cooperation, with an intimitate and location-specific knowledge of the environment, enabled the Ladakhis not only to survive but to prosper. Then came 'development'. Now in Leh, the capital, one finds pollution and divisiveness, inflation and unemployment, intolerance and greed. Centuries of ecological balance and social harmony are under threat of modernization.

Ancient Futures is much more than a film about Ladakh. The breakdown of Ladakh's culture and environment forces us to re-examine what we really mean by 'progress' - not only in the 'developing' parts of the world, but in the industrialized world as well. The story of Ladakh teaches us about the root causes of environmental, social and psychological problems, and provides valuable guidelines for our own future.

Part of the process of re-imaging Christchurch is taking a look at our place in the world, and in particular the rapid cultural shifts we've seen in the short existence of the city that urbanisation and the shift in economics have driven. One presenter who can help inform us about these issues is Helena Norberg-Hodge.

Helena Norberg-Hodge is the founder and director of the International Society for Ecology and Culture (ISEC) and its predecessor, the Ladakh Project. She is the author of Ancient Futures: Learning from Ladakh and co-author of Bringing the Food Economy Home. Her articles have appeared in numerous journals such as The Ecologist, Resurgence, and YES! magazine.

Norberg- Hodge's ground-breaking work in the Himalayan region of Ladakh is internationally recognized, and earned her the Right Livelihood Award.

A particular focus of Norberg-Hodge's is the impact of the global economy on culture and agriculture and in particular the root causes of our social and environmental crises.

She is on the International Commission on the Future of Food and Agriculture, launched with the support of the government of Tuscany. She is also a member of the editorial board of The Ecologist magazine and a co-founder of the International Forum on Globalisation and the Global Eco-village Network.
