Dr. Lara Boyd - Neuroscientist - The Power to Shape The Brain You Want

by e-bluespirit 2023. 6. 26.

In a classic research-based TEDx Talk, Dr. Lara Boyd describes how neuroplasticity gives you the power to shape the brain you want. Recorded at TEDxVancouver at Rogers Arena on November 14, 2015.

Our knowledge of the brain is evolving at a breathtaking pace, and Dr. Lara Boyd is positioned at the cutting edge of these discoveries. In 2006, she was recruited by the University of British Columbia to become the Canada Research Chair in Neurobiology and Motor Learning. Since that time she has established the Brain Behaviour Lab, recruited and trained over 40 graduate students, published more than 80 papers and been awarded over $5 million in funding.

Dr. Boyd’s efforts are leading to the development of novel, and more effective, therapeutics for individuals with brain damage, but they are also shedding light on broader applications. By learning new concepts, taking advantage of opportunities, and participating in new activities, you are physically changing who you are, and opening up a world of endless possibility.

In her second research based TEDx talk, Dr. Lara Boyd explains how stress can affect our ability to make new memories and impair our ability to learn. Yet because human behaviour profoundly affects the brain, we can engage in activities that counter the negative impacts of stress. Dr. Boyd discusses her research which has revealed the powerful impact of exercise on brain health and learning.

She also describes the pivotal role sleep plays in making new memories and discusses how practicing mindfulness leads to lower levels of stress. While life is stressful, we can choose behaviors that stimulate positive brain change, lower stress and enhance learning.

Dr. Lara Boyd is a Professor and Wall Scholar at the University of British Columbia. She is both a Neuroscientist and Physical Therapist. At the University of British Columbia Dr. Boyd directs the Brain Behaviour Lab, which performs research that tests ideas surrounding how behaviour and brain health affect learning. Dr. Boyd was recruited to the University of British Columbia in 2006 to take a Canada Research Chair position. Since that time, recruited and trained over 75 graduate students, published more than 200 papers and been awarded over $20 million in research dollars. With her mom she has written a children’s book on the brain titled “What’s Under My Hair”, and is currently working on a book on brain health for adults.

Dr. Lara Boyd is a Neuroscientist and Physical Therapist at the University of British Columbia. She is a professor and has held a Canada Research Chair, a Michael Smith Foundation for Health Career Scientist award and been a Peter Wall Early Career Scholar. Dr. Boyd directs the Brain Behaviour Lab at the University of British Columbia. Her TEDx talk “After this your brain will not be the same” has over 25 million views. Dr. Boyd is an expert in mapping how behaviours, environments and experiences affect brain health and learning using techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging and non-invasive brain stimulation. To date this work has largely examined the impact of exercise and learning on neurobiology. In 2020 she will be a Wall scholar turning her attention to developing understanding of the importance of the arts for brain health.
