Snoopy by Everhart

Tom Everhart, a vivid, larger-than-life world of painter. Blobs of red, streaks of blue, smudges of yellow, and swipes, swathes, and swishes of every other color imaginable boldly announce themselves to the viewers of these singular, spectacular works. As unique as they are, something familiar may strike you about these paintings, and, indeed, their subjects are always outtake of the beloved PEANUTS comic strip.

As part of a collaborative art project for PEANUTS, Tom and PEANUTS creator and cartoonist Charles M. Schulz were introduced in 1980 at Schulz's studios in Santa Rosa, California. At the time, Tom, an artist concentrating primarily on large-scale nature paintings, had no education in cartooning. Blowing up some of the PEANUTS strips on a twenty-five foot wall for closer examination, Tom found that Schulz's unusual pen strokes, now larger than life, translated in painterly brush strokes that overwhelmingly connected to Everhart's own stylistic form of expressionism. This was the beginning of Tom's obsession with Schulz's line-art style and a close friendship between the two men, both of which lasted ever since.

Everhart continues to be the only fine artist authorized by Charles M. Schulz to artistically render PEANUTS line art and to use the characters as painting subjects. His work has been shown at the Louvre in 1990, the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History, Montreal's Museum of Fine Arts and galleries and museums in Rome, Venice, Milan, Minneapolis, Baltimore, Tokyo and Houston. In 1992, Everhart's painting, "Pigpen's Dirtballs" was filmed for a CBS special, "The Fabulous Funnies," and several works from his collection were used as a the backdrop for the CBS special on Charles Schulz, hosted by Whoopi Goldberg. The book Snoopy, Not Your Average Dog (HarperCollins, 1996) includes a chapter on and photographs of Everhart's work. Everhart was also featured in the book, PEANUTS: A Golden Celebration (HarperCollins, 1999). In 2000, Tom Everhart Snoopy in Paintings, a book that compiles a ten year survey, from 1990 to 2000, of his works published by the Suntory Museum in Osaka, Japan.
