Parsons Dance Company/DANCE ENSEMBLE

 

 

 

I attended a dance concert, “ADVANCED DANCE ENSEMBLE” at El Camino College Campus Theatre on Friday, December 5, 2003. ECC dance faculties choreographed for ECC Concert Dance Ensemble. Bernice Boseman is the artistic director.

The program is consisted of Jazz Dance, Ballet, Modern Dance, Hip-Hop and Native Ritual Dance. Each performance contains with its meaningful contents and themes combined various movements with appropriate costumes and soundtracks. The lighting design enhanced the dance performance along with the projector for background images.

I enjoyed throughout the performance since I am in Beginning Dance Class and I learned a lot of basic movements for each dance style. I would like to express the different impressions from the different dance style.

First, Ballet, “Music of the Night” choreographed by Daniel Berney. The soundtrack is a compilation of “beauty and the Beast”, “Phantom of the Opera”, and “Titanic” so as its contents. It implies a lady’s imaginations that while she’s reading a book in her bed, as if she’s the heroine of the stories. Especially the three duo dancing displayed the love stories and romance just like the each story explains, expressing the intensity of the particular parts for the heart of the music. I could follow the dancer’s movements such as Tandu, Posse, Releve and Turn along with the arm positions.

Second, Jazz Dance, “Cell Block” choreographed by Lisa Walker. It is more liable to entertain the audience. on the stage, there are several props, the steal bars representing the jail and the red clothes represent blood, caught the audience’s attention. Jazz dance is a free ｅxpression through the body movement associating with Jazz Music, so it contains a lot of body isolations and interesting attitudes such as tilts with change of directions and pique with tilts, rond de jambe with hops and turns.

Finally, Modern Dance, “Wind Spirit” is the one, choreographed by Moonea Choi. I liked this performance the most among the advanced dance ensemble. It has a unique style that emanates the wind spirit through entire stage. Choreograph is sharp and clean, the energy is connected one another, each dancers seem to conceive the elements of wind spirit. Dancer’s movements are pretty much familiar with me since I’ve already learned them such as turn out and parallel first and second positions, rolling up and rolling down, contraction, first and second position of arms, etc. Also the music is filled with the ｅxpression of wind spirit to the audience. on the stage, the different angles of the lighting and the mist side effects are very elaborate works that coordinate well on time scheduling. All the hard works come together and create strong minds to express their inspiration of “Wind Spirit” for the audience to feel emotionally overwhelming.

          Over all, I enjoyed the ECC Concert Dance Ensemble. I understand more the movement of the body and the way of the communication. I appreciate the ｅxpression of feeling by the different methods of dance with music. It is a unique way to express feelings and emotions of human beings.
