Suarez-Orozco (education, Harvard) and Qin-Hilliard (doctoral candidate
in education, Harvard) have edited a volume that examines the impacts of
globalization and immigration on children and youth, both in and out of
school. "Not only has globalization become the central issue of our
time," they say, "but it will define the world our children inherit. So
those concerned about the future must ask, how are our primary and
secondary schools preparing today's students to be successful citizens
in a global society?" To answer this question in ten essays, the
authors--mainly Harvard-attached scholars--look to a number of
disciplines, exploring the psychological, sociological, political, and
historical effects of globalization and immigration on children and
youth. While the editors see this as a handbook for anyone interested in
helping young people become effective citizens of a global society, the
tone and vocabulary make it most appropriate for academic audiences and,
therefore, academic libraries.
