VotersForPeace Marquee

Dear Voters,

When the new Congress began on January 4, we were worried about the Democrats' decision to exclude the Iraq war in their "100 Hours" agenda. We were frustrated by the leadership's refusal to use the "power of the purse" to block Bush's war funding request and we were disgusted that Bush was refusing to acknowledge the pleas of the Iraqi people and leadership (read Dal LaMagna's Iraq Reconciliation Plan for more details on "What Do Iraqi's Want?").

In the last two weeks, however, more than 3,000 supporters of VotersForPeace have sent emails and made calls to their members of Congress imploring them to "Stop the Escalation - Stop Funding the War." Anti-war organizations across the nation have also continued to take loud, clear actions to show our nation's new leadership that we will not stop marching, rallying, emailing, calling or protesting until our troops are finally back on U.S. soil.

Our persistent voices must have helped to tip the balance because Congress is now aggressively taking on Bush's escalation proposal and introducing a flurry of bills that will do everything from oppose an escalation of troops, block future funding, provide reparations and training in Iraq and start an immediate withdrawal of US troops, to oppose a strike on Iran.

TAKE ACTION!

We hope that you will continue to email and call your Representative and Senators to thank them for their support or ask them to consider supporting these bills. You can also help to influence Congress be signing this petition by Democracy Rising which will be hand-delivered to Congress after Bush presents his funding request at the beginning of February.

March on Washington to End the War! Don't forget that on January 27, anti-war activists from across the country will rally in Washington, DC for the March on Washington, organized by United for Peace and Justice (UFPJ). Join tens of thousands of Americans in this act of solidarity! Go to www.unitedforpeace.org to connect with people in your area who are attending, sign up on ride boards, volunteer on the day of the event, or assist the outreach effort. Not able to make it to DC for the march? Organize a January 27 peace rally in your town!

Petition: Stop the Escalation, Begin the Withdrawal

"I oppose Bush’s plan to escalate the war by sending additional troops to Iraq. I urge my members of Congress to actively plan a rapid and responsible withdrawal from Iraq."

*Required fields.

  First Name*

In Washington, DC rather than planning a rapid and responsible withdrawal from Iraq they are planning to escalate the war with a surge of new troops. The voters sent a message to Washington, DC on November 7 by voting out pro-war politicians and giving the Democrats control of both Houses of Congress. Since then, voter opposition to the costly US occupation has grown sharper as polls show growing opposition to the war from across the political spectrum 62% among Republicans and 88% of Democrats. Even a majority of Military Times readers oppose the war. And, when it comes to escalation there is almost no support with a CNN poll support for a ‘troop surge’ is at a puny 11%. Please take two immediate steps:

1. Sign the petition. We will deliver this to the president and the congressional leadership before any vote on additional funding for Iraq.

2. Forward this petition to everyone you know.
