Published as part of an ambitious, years-long project by Ewha Womans University Press to publish a total of 50 books on Korean culture and arts - both in Korean and English - these English-version works are aimed at tracing the foundation and legacy of Korea's traditional culture and art by detailing their characteristics. The publisher, which has so far finished releasing seven English-version volumes since the launch of the project in September 2003, plans to release three more by the end of the year. The first seven books are: "A Brief History of Korea"; "Norigae: Splendor of the Korean Costume"; "Roofs and Lines"; "Windows and Doors"; "Stone, Walls and Paths"; "The Traditional Space"; and "Floral Lattices, Columns and Pavilions." The entire series is scheduled to be completed by 2009. Other areas that will be introduced in the series include Korean language, literature, folk religions, holidays, pansori, paintings, architecture, handicraft, dance, and food. Part of the plan is to raise the competitiveness of Korean culture through related academic communities on the global stage by helping foreigners find easier anthropological approaches to Korean culture as well as to its originality, essence and universality.
