With my background, education, training and experiences, I feel I am qualified to become a foreign language teacher at the Defense Language Institute.

In my early years, under a great artist who had accomplished an astonishing achievement for the Korean art world; a dean of the Art College; my father’s benevolent teaching and under a distinguished educator who has personally practiced the Korean traditional proprieties and respect the elders; an elementary school teacher; my mother’s acute discipline, I was inspired by both parents with the prominent sensitivity. Also, I had obtained a powerful, skilled intelligence’s pioneer spirit from the greatest teachers. Consequently, I had received the focus of attention for an honor and exemplary student all the way through high school.

Afterward, when I majored in Korean painting at Ewha Women’s University, I deeply perceived the intellectual beauty of Korea and eventually recognized the importance of all-round education for the next generations to come. Therefore, I became an educational-minded person, thus I increased the efforts to develop teacher’s abilities. Furthermore, I took the teachers’ requirement classes such as “Principles of Education”, “Method of Teaching”, and “School and Community.”

After graduating from the University, I managed my own Art Studio which I considered the developing creativity from student’s untapped sources through their candid self-expression. Since I noticed the magnitude of all-round education through art education, I taught the students to use proper language for the emotional education propose in aesthetic appreciation. As an illustration, a teacher demonstrating the responsible awareness leads a student with thoughtful considerations, a deep analysis and a caring love, the student naturally have the sincere respect for the teacher; furthermore, the student comes to the greater personal growth and fruition. Likewise, I learned the consequences from my experiences.

I immigrated to the United States in 1990; I had another opportunity to teach at the Korean Institute of Southern California. While I taught Korean to the Korean-Americans (2nd generation) who can only speak English, I realized much needed importance of bilingual teachers. Thus, I attended Korean teacher’s conferences held every semester; especially Dr. Euyoung Ryu’s lecture, “The need of Korean Language Education in Multi-ethnic Society,” opened my eyes to the new perspectives of the foreign language education. Moreover, I had pursued the studies for the recharging teacher’s capabilities. Therefore, I earned the systematic Korean teaching methods from the experiences through the repeated years.

Besides, I had two jobs managing both teaching and work; hence I had learned more about the broad stretch of American society. By increasing the number of students, I have been running the Echo Learning Center for the last 5 years that it made my teaching experience career over 20 years.

After all of the significant qualifications and the valuable experiences, I am absolutely confident in teaching Korean to the intelligent American military service men and women and exposing Korean culture to the Defense Language Institute.
