Wonder

I wonder as I wander… out under the sky. – John Jacob Niles I sometimes think that wonder is like an endangered species – we don't have enough of it and are in danger of losing it altogether. You lose wonder when you try and explain everything. Wonder is wasted in seminars, and "how-to" books, and manuals for living, and steps to a more victorious Christian life. Wonder is what takes over after you have explained all you can explain and answered all you can answer. In my experience, we have tried to answer too much. Wonder is what finite, sinful creatures do when we encounter the holy. Wonder is what Mary did after an angel told her she was going to conceive of God and bear the savior of the world. Wonder is what shepherds did when they found a baby wrapped up and lying in a feed trough after being led to a stable by a choir of angelic beings whose singing still rang in their ears. Wonder is what great and wealthy kings do when they enter the presence of a child whose glory and significance was only matched by the interstellar GPS system that got them there in the first place. Christmas is a time of wonder, what with the lights, the music, the magic, the snow (fake or real), and the children... always the children. Christmas is for children because they still know how to wonder. Grown-ups outgrow wonder all too soon. We get good at explanations. We have reasons for things. We seem to prefer an organized reality. Children just experience things; Adults take notes. Children ask questions; Adults are supposed to know. Children wonder why; Adults wonder if. When Mary birthed Jesus 'twas in a cow's stall, With wise men and farmers and shepherds and all; And high from God's heaven a star's light did fall, And the promise of the ages they then did recall. If Jesus had wanted for any wee thing, A star in the sky or a bird on the wing, Or all of God's angels in heaven to sing, He surely could've had it... 'cause he was the King. But He didn't, and that right there is probably the biggest wonder of all.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Get up and get out

by John Fischer Your mission today (should you choose to accept it) is to get yourself up out of bed and throw yourself out into the world. That's right: Get up and get out. My, how daring we are! Well, yes, when you consider how dangerous a place the world is, and how inadequate we feel when we try to make a difference in it. But just read this: "For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. To the one we are the smell of death; to the other the fragrance of life. And who is equal to such a task?" (2 Corinthians 2:15-16 NIV) Now there is a picture: You and me having a significant effect on people, churning up reactions as varied as life and death by our mere presence. It's no surprise Paul would wonder, in the next breath, who, if any, might be equal to this task. It's a rhetorical question that he intends to answer, and he does in the next chapter. "Not that we are adequate in ourselves to consider anything as coming from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God who has made us adequate …." (2 Corinthians 3:5-6 NIV) In other words, we aren't adequate, but we are. We aren't adequate in ourselves, but we are in Christ. And we find this out when we jump into the world, believing. By believing, you are taking the particular characteristics of a believer (a person in whom God's presence is a factor) out into the world, and by nature of your presence in the world and the presence of Christ in your life, you will make a difference. So, you see, it is all about literally throwing yourself out there and trusting that God shows up when you do, even when you don't exactly know what's going to happen next, you just know you'll be ready when it does by nature of the Spirit of God in you. How about that for living dangerously? As a friend of mine said once, almost nonchalantly, a true Christian is choosing the most dangerous occupation in the world. I think he's right, not only because Satan is alive and well on planet earth working to discredit those who believe, but because God likes us living on the edge in believing him. I really don't think faith is mainstream. I don't think it gets the popular vote. Real faith does not win mass-market appeal. True faith is a challenge of wits. It's the mover and shaker of the status quo. Faith kicks us out of our safety net and into the world. If nothing's on the line, then there's no faith required. That's dangerous, but all the more exhilarating when God shows up and shows himself to be true to his promises. So get up and get out. It's the only way to truly find out!

“우리가 무슨 일이든지 우리에게서 난 것같이 생각하여 스스로 만족할 것이 아니니

우리의 만족은 오직 하나님께로서 났느니라.” (고린도후서 3:5)

아마도 대부분의 그리스도인들은 적어도 한번은 이 진리에 대해 고민해 본적이 있을 것이다.

영적인 성장은 우리가 ‘하나님을 위해서 하는 일’과 ‘하나님 안에서 하는 일’과의 끊임없는 갈등이다.

그 싸움은 우리가 흔히 말하는 선과 악의 싸움이 아니기 때문에 이 둘을 구별하기란 매우 어렵다.

오히려 선(善)과 최선(最善)의 갈등이라고 보는 것이 나을 것이다.

선 또한 너무 좋은 것이지만, 선은 언제나 최선의 적이다. 선을 행하는 것은 보기에도 좋아 보이고 또 그렇게 느껴진다.

하지만 그것은 최선의 것이 아니기 때문에 결국 쓸모가 없다.

선이라는 것은 인간에 의해서, 인간의 노력으로 인해서 생산된 성공이다.

선을 행하는 것은 ‘인간 편에서 하나님을 위해 일하는 것’이다.

선을 행하는 것은 ‘우리들의 자원과 능력에 근거한 것’이다.

우리들이 하나님을 위해 일했기 때문에 선한 일을 했다고 생각하게 된다.

그러나 모든 일들이 하나님의 의해서가 아니고 하나님으로부터의 일이 아니라면, 궁극적으로는 성공이 아닌 것이다.

모든 위대한 그리스인들의 노력들이라 할지라도 한번은 이 함정에 빠진다. 우리들은 결과를 마음대로 다루길 원한다.

우리들이 이러한 목적을 가지고 선을 행하려 한다면 분명 우리들의 손길은 함정으로 가까이 가게 될 것이다.

결국 당신은 ‘자신을 하나님께 내어 맡기는 위험’을 무릅쓰지 않고는 하나님의 능력을 체험하지 못하게 되는 것이다.

당신은 언제 하나님을 위해 일한다고 느끼는가?

당신이 매우 지치고 피곤할 때, 아니면 정 반대로 당신의 성공을 자랑스러워하는 때인지도 모른다.

당신은 과거의 어떤 일들을 통해서 성공하는 법칙을 발견했기 때문에 과거 행했던 일들을 반복해서 하게 된다.

이것은 성경에서 말하는 ‘육신을 좇아 행하는 것’과 같다.

그리고 그것이 선하게 보이지만, 나중에 마른 장작더미가 타듯 그것들도 모두 타버릴 것이다.

당신은 지금 하고 있는 일이 하나님의 주권적인 권능 안에서 하는 일이라는 것을 어떻게 알 수 있는가?

당신이 모험을 하고 있을 때, 수영장에서 발이 땅에 닫지 않는 것과 같은 상황에서, 정확히 당신이 무엇을 하고 있는지도 모르는 상황에서,

당신이 처한 지금의 상황에서 자신의 약점은 예리할 정도로 정확히 알고 있는 상황에서,

만약 하나님께서 나타나지 않으신다면 당신으로서는 전혀 해결할 수 없는 상황,

이런 상황이야 말로 성경이 말하는 “성령을 좇아 행할 수 있는” 상황이다.

이러한 모험에 뛰어들 여러분을 환영한다. 실제로 이 일은 매우 흥미롭다.

일단 당신이 그 안으로 뛰어들어서 당신 자신 이외의 누군가에게 의지하고,

당신이 조절할 수 없는 어떤 상황에 누군가를 믿을 수밖에 없다면,

당신은 전혀 새로운 믿음의 자원들을 발견하게 될 것이다.?
