Lecture by Ray Carofano

          “RAY CAROFANO / TEN YEARS - photographic works from 1994-2004” on month of April, 2004. He introduced himself from his childhood, when he had a lot of experience with nature. His direction and vision of life has changed through self ｅxpressions, when he became teenager. He believes that emotional ｅxpression is the most important ways to develop artistic mind. It leads him to find the main theme for his photographic works which is the life cycles that death became a new life.

           He uses his instincts through the lens in order to feel a sense of direction in his work, but he plans occasionally what to photograph. He opens the possibility of discovery, and he has the vision to transform the reality to the abstract way. He prints his images on silver gelatin. He manipulates some of his photographs during the exposure and split-tone the prints. While he works in the darkroom, he allows his personal ｅxpression which leads out as more creative than technical methods in his printing stage.

 

I liked very much the way to display 4 pictures, which are “Water Hyacinths”, “Young Apple Trees”, “The Two Trees” and “Six Black Ducks”, together in deep left side corner. These photographs are well touched with great emotions. I felt that I was in the middle of the peaceful nature where my eyes can draw a big contour along with 4 individual natures. It creates a whole new image that I was able to develop my unique story. The contrast, in between the intense landscapes and calm trees, makes my journey fulfilled with the energy from the nature.
