ATHENS 2004 Olympic

Interactive Art Installations

Following the submission of a large number of proposals from around the world,
the Look of the City Section of ATHENS 2004 has selected
a series of interactive installations to be realised alongside the routes.

The following interactive installations will operate primarily
from 21:00 to 02:00, between 12 and 29 August.

Dimitris Kozaris: Living in Athens (“Athens Reflections” Route)

An interactive platform
at Koumoundourou Square and Kranaou Street projects
the interior life of an apartment building onto its blind exterior wall.

meso (Michael Hoepfel): Light Strive (“Athens Scripts” Route)

Passersby play with a spotlight moving
across a building façade at Korai Square.

Maurice Benayoun: Watch Out! The Eyes of the City
(“Landscapes below Athens” Route)

A special box on Ermou Street captures
the eye of the passerby and in turn projects
it on screens above the busy sidewalk.

Takis Zerdevas/ Makis Faros: Tavern (“Landscapes below Athens” Route)

The atmosphere and conversations of a Greek tavern are ‘revealed’ to passersby
by six interactive tables on a specially designed floor on Ermou Street
across from the ancient cemetery of Kerameikos.

lot architecture: openaircondition (“Landscapes below Athens” Route)

An interactive light and fog platform
is installed on a street opening at Adrianou & Thiseiou Str.
As pedestrians chase the light,
cooling clouds of air are activated by their steps on the stage surface.

Dimitris Tzamouranis/ Kathrin Lind: Follow Me (“Athens Reflections” Route)

‘Twin’ projections of archival and contemporary films
are shown on the blind walls of Psyrri and the old Athens Market,
near the spaces where they were first shot.

Paul Matisse: Olympic Bell for Athens (“Listen to Athens” Route)

An interactive sound sculpture by Paul Matisse is
placed at Thiseion Square,
close to the fence of the Ancient Agora.
Pedestrians ring a deep, harmonious sound
by striking a hammer on a cylindrical aluminum bell,
suspended by specially designed supporting columns.

Mitch Benoff:

Athens Olympic Meteor A 300-metre-long line of lights on Mt. Lycabettus
creates a flash of light that races up the hill at 1000 kilometres per hour.

J. Meejin Yoon: White Noise/White Light (“Listen to Athens” Route)

An interactive platform is placed near the entry to the Ancient Theatre of Dionysus, on Dionysiou Areopagitou St.
The installation is a field of fibre-optic light strands
which responds to pedestrian movement.
The strands brighten and activate concealed speakers
which emit a sound sampling of the city in the wake of the passerby.
