It's been 40 years since author Brennan Manning was "ambushed by God" and on the far side of despair himself. As a gutter-alcoholic who was completely broken, he found an unshakable trust in the love of Christ for him as he was then, not as he could be or is now.

 

Authenticity with God is critical in developing this trust relationship. In his own inimitable voice, Manning tells us, "Raw honesty with Jesus about our doubts and anxieties, our lust and laziness, our shabby prayer life and stale religiosity, our mixed motives and divided hearts, is the risk we take in the certainty of being acceptable and accepted. It is the full and mature ｅxpression of invincible trust." Over the years, this trust ripens into confidence and bears certain fruit, such as gratitude to God. But it's not always easy, he admits. Manning, the Catholic-priest-turned-itinerant-evangelist who penned The Ragamuffin Gospel, perceptively addresses the intricacies of trusting God, arguing that to trust in God is to bring God joy. He distinguishes this from intellectual assent to Christian teachings and proposes that when Christians add hopeAthe belief that God will do them goodAto faith, then they trust. He acknowledges the problems of evil and pain that make trust difficult, but calls readers to trust God despite these circumstances. The God in whom Manning urges trust is both transcendent in glory and immanent in Christ. Manning suggests that gratitude is the prerequisite to trust, and grateful trust becomes the antidote to both self-flagellation and self-pity. Because the trust he proclaims is so complete, so perfect, Manning calls it "ruthless." The term ragamuffin, made famous in his earlier title, refers to the brokenness and spiritual poverty of people who need God. Although the titular word threatens a too-precious approach, Manning is in fact intellectually strenuous, and the book highly readable; he tells stories and draws upon religious writers from medieval saints down to such present-day authors as Philip Yancey, Dallas Willard, Frederick Buechner and Richard Foster. 신뢰의 기쁨과 확신에 대해 담은 책. 지은이는 하나님 사랑을 신뢰하려면 대담한 용기가 필요하다고 말한다. 우리 삶에 가장 절실하게 필요한 것이지만 종종 간과되고 있는 것이 하나님 사랑에 대한 절대적 신뢰이며, 신뢰를 되찾기 위한 방법을 다루었다.

 

 

 

Brennan Manning 브레넌 매닝

그의 삶은 ‘본향 찾는 나그네’의 삶이었다. 한국전 참전용사이기도 한 그는, 젊은 시절 세상적 성취를 좇던 삶에서 좀 더 깊은 영적 실재를 추구하기 위해 프란체스코 수도회의 수사(修士)의 길에 들어서 빈자(貧者)들의 뒷골목에서 그들과 함께하며 긍휼의 사역을 펼쳤다. 가난한 자들 속에서 낮에는 육체노동을 하고 밤에는 기도와 묵상에 잠기곤 했다. 1970년대에는 플로리다를 중심으로 캠퍼스 사역을 성공적으로 수행하다가 알코올중독으로 처참한 실패를 맛보았다. 알코올중독자 치유센터에서 하나님의 은혜에 대한 재각성을 통해 그의 몸과 영혼은 온전히 치유되고 회복되었다.

‘은혜의 복음’에 대한 뜨거운 감격으로 그는 사제직을 내놓고 ‘오직 은혜’(sola Gratia), ‘오직 믿음’(sola Fide)의 전도자가 된다. 그는 행함으로 하나님께 공덕을 쌓으려는 인간의 공로주의, 실적주의에서 피난하여 탕자 아버지와 같은 하늘 아버지의 은혜의 가슴에서 안식할 수 있었다. 그는 가톨릭의 수행주의 체제 하에 있어보았기 때문에 은혜의 복음의 달콤함을 그 누구보다도 절감한다. 사도 바울이 외쳤고, 마르틴 루터가 재발견했던 ‘오직 은혜’의 슬로건은 아직도 율법에 의지하고 인간의 실적으로 하나님께 인정받으려는 오늘 우리의 교회와 우리의 신앙을 개혁하고 바로잡아준다고 그는 주장한다.

그는 우리에게 예수님이 의인을 위해 오지 않고 죄인을 위해 오셨음을 재상기시킨다. 주님은 자신께 나아오는 창녀, 세리, 거지, 사마리아인을 받아들이시고 은혜로 품으셨다. 그러나 자기의(自己義)에 함몰된 그 당시 종교지도층은 내치셨다. 그는 오늘 우리에게 필요한 것은‘잃어버린 자’, 하나님 앞에서 가진 게 아무것도 없는 ‘부랑아’(ragamuffin)와 같은 “심령이 가난한” 자리에 서야 하는 것임을 일깨워준다. 주님은 이런 자에게 말로 할 수 없는 은혜를 베풀어주신다.
매닝은 자신의 인생 질곡의 진솔한 체험에서 우려낸 진리의 말씀과 더불어 문사철(文史哲)을 아우르는 감동 넘치는 수사력으로 우리를 놀라운 은혜의 세계로 안내한다.
